Snow, wind, white-out conditions -- we had it all yesterday -- and so much of it that the Birder's World offices closed, something that hardly ever happens.
It was worse elsewhere, of course: Twenty-three Milwaukee County buses got stuck in snowdrifts. Schools closed. The airport shut down. A show (The Lion King) didn't go on. And the National Guard was called out near Madison, after blizzard conditions left more than 500 motorists stranded in a 19-mile backup on I-90.
It was almost enough to make you think that spring just might decide not to come this year. But we knew better, Matt and I, since we had already obtained evidence to the contrary: We heard Northern Cardinals singing the day before (Tuesday, Feb. 5).
They were the first of the year, and 10 days ahead of last year. --C.H.
