An event I had been waiting for finally happened while I was walking the dog early this morning: I heard a cardinal, a male just like this one, singing. When Dunkin stopped to sniff, I stood and listened harder and realized that a second cardinal was responding to the first -- and that a third, farther off, was responding to the other two.
Never mind that that the calendars hanging over my desk here in the office say the first day of spring is still 33 days away. Never mind that the temperature this morning was two degrees above zero. Territories are already being established in southeastern Wisconsin. Shorebirds, and colorful Neotropical migrants, and courtship, will soon follow. -- C.H.
